| 説明 | This is the back of the envelope sent from Kufah via Najaf to the UK on Guy Fawkes Day, 1986 when Saddam was the west's best mate. No room was left on the front of the letter for this excellent issue celebrating the" battle of Qadisiya". I wonder who made and supplied the "kit"?In 637AD the Arabs defeated the Zoroastrian Persians at the Battle of Qadisiya to bring Islam to modern day Iraq. The Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s was a flare up of (only) a 1350 year old simmering grievance. In 1975, the paranoid Sunni Ba-ath leadership banned the annual Shi-ite pilgrimage from Najaf to Karbala, and in 1980 the national Shi-ite leader Baqir al-Sadr was arrested and executed. Hmmm. However, Saddam cleverly invoked the 637ad battle to whip up support for his dispute with Iran as an Arab-Persian war. Indeed a majority of his forces were Shi-ite Muslims. This stamp is a perfect example of his propaganda working.A good precis of Iran-Iraq/Ottoman relations down the centuries is found here...www.danielpipes.org/article/164Between September 1980 and 1988 Iran and Iraq were at war. Iraq's subsequent invasion of Kuwait in 1990 led to the first Gulf War in 1991. |
