| 説明 | The old bridge at Aylesford, on the River Medway, dates from around 1250. Originally the Medway was crossed here by a ford, hence the village name, but the bridge was built to improve access and, at the same time, possibly raise tolls. The bridge is made of local ragstone with a very moderate gradient to the centre and has stone parapets and refuges for pedestrians. The widest span central arch of the bridge is an alteration made in 1811. A barge-bed remains below the bridge on the south side constructed from large baulks of timber and which are visible at low tide. The bridge is now closed to cars and motorbikes but remains in use for pedestrians, cycles and horses. |
