説明 Torrens Vale and Dairy Flat. This area near Yankalilla was one of the early areas surveyed by Colonel William Light and his team. Only the flat valley bottoms were surveyed at that stage. Selection of blocks of land began in 1840 and the first settler was Mr Osborne on a standard 80 acres section of land. In those years 80 acres was considered sufficient for a small farm with a few acres of wheat. Farmers and their families could not sow and reap more than a few acres by hand. It was also assumed they would grow vegetables, perhaps field potatoes and corn, and they would tend some sheep, pigs and milk a few cows thus having supplies of mutton, bacon, sausage, milk, butter and cream. And their wives would have some wool for spinning apart from wool sold to England. Other early settlers in the Torrens Vale -Dairy Flat area were Strangways, Lush, Jagger, Barrett, Nosworthy and Governor Sir Henry Young. The Yankalilla River flows through both localities. The first recorded dairy at Dairy Flat was in 1840 and it belonged to Captain Field and Alfred Baker. By 1842 one Dairy Flat landowner had 200 dairy cows. In the early days some salted butter was boxed and sent to England but most milk was turned into cheese for the Adelaide market. The first butter factory was not established in this area until 1890 at nearby Bald Hills on the way to Inman Valley. By the 1930s milk was sent to the Myponga dairy factory. Bulk handling of milk began in 1966 in this area. In 1863 part of the Dairy Flat district was renamed Torrens Vale. The school here in Torrens Vale that had opened in 1858 was renamed Torrens Vale in 1908. It closed in 1954. Torrens Vale has a small Baptist church called Rockwell Baptist from 1867 to 1879. It closed the next year in 1880. The church was re-used by Methodist between 1936 and 1947. Since then it has been a private residence. Methodists were active in the early years of the Torrens Vale- Dairy Flat area. In 1854 the Nosworthy family supported the Bible Christian chapel erected in Torrens Vale although the land was donated by Captain Henry Field. Reverend Lee resided in Torrens Vale on his own land and ran a school in the church until 1872. The Bible Christian church appears to have operated until around 1900 when the three Methodist churches amalgamated. Over in Dairy Flat the Harcourt Wesleyan Methodist chapel opened in 1855 at a time when the district was quite heavily populated. It was named after the second Wesleyan Methodist Minister to arrive in SA, John Harcourt who was based at Willunga. In fact the Dairy Flat Wesleyan Church was the head church of the Wesleyan Methodists from 1855 to 1871. The church closed around 1881. Both churches are now gone and the congregations later attended the Yankalilla and Inman Valley Methodist churches.
