| 説明 | Next time you're in virtual London, why not visit one of the finest examples of unbuilt architecture ever to not exist? The Imperial Monumental Halls would have been an extension to Westminster Abbey, containing tombs and monuments to the great and good of the British Empire. The roof of the Halls would have been the same height as the roof of the Abbey, and on the Abingdon Street side it would have incorporated two spires of roughly the same height as the Abbey's towers. The Abbey itself would have gained a third tower at its transept (something that had been discussed for many years but never executed). But of course, the crowning glory of the Halls would have been their 550-foot (168 metre) tower. It would have dwarfed Parliament's 323 foot (98.5 metre) Victoria Tower, and made the slender 315-foot (96 metre) tower of Big Ben look positively little. It would have remained one of London's most imposing buildings even amidst today's crowded skyline. |
