Shelley, Wordsworth and Coleridge)The everlasting substance of ThingsFlows through thy hold–Some crude, some sweet,Creeping towards pipelines buried deep–Turning an oily gaze toward a future whereThe Wild refineries scent the air–Glowing, gaseous green flames,The Source of our Power, cascading political games.Traveling distances unimaginable,O’er seas fishless and unfathomable–Amongst the waves tossing Awful foamReflecting the rainbows of Petroleum’s crownOozing from some sunken Liberian ship–Her death spreading through ecosystems almost deplete–O mighty Oil Tanker! thou hast set man’s waysIn thy wake we follow these Turbulent days–For we have tasted the precious dark wineSwiftly dripping from thy vast Ebon hull,Your Mighty pumping of life’s very blood–Rushing in torrents of Power and SludgeTo the hearth and heart of American’s who judge,Their soul’s wealth by SUV, Bic razors and disposable diapers.Blessed by Bush, Thou art, the Saudi Royals and Iraq–Their oily, vapor brooding, a perplexing mystery for peace yet to come–Mighty ship Thou doth hold a microcosm of the World,Where sailor and Captain alike do reposeIn the cave of Television, lulled into watchingWild torrents of sitcom chatter, heard in the clamorOf potato chip munching–Thy Power!
