| 説明 | John Reynell, Reynella and Hardy Winery.John Reynell (1809 to 1873) arrived in South Australia in 1838 and took up land in the Southern Vales in 1839 once Surveyor General Colonel William Light’s team had surveyed that area. He married in 1839 and called his new wheat and sheep farm Reynella Farm. He was a founder in 1839 of the Royal Horticultural Society and by 1842 he had a flock of around 4,000 sheep at Reynella. He had planted his first vines in 1841 with the help of his employee Thomas Hardy and he created the Old Cave Cellar in 1845 to store the wine whilst it matured. He produced his first wine in 1843 but not for commercial use for a year or two. He is believed to have been the first commercial wine producer in South Australia and he pioneered the export of SA wine to New Zealand. He built the first part of his Reynella Farm House in 1842. In 1854 he sold some of his land for the creation of the town of Reynella. His son Walter inherited Reynell Farm in 1873 and continued with the vines and wine making but he also established a real estate business and pastoralist interest in the north of SA. He added extensively to Reynell House around 1883 in the Italianate style after his marriage of 1877 and when he became a director of Elder Smith and Co. Walter Reynell died at Reynell Farm which was also the place where he was born. The Reynell winery was called Chateau Reynella and it still stands in the grounds near the homestead and Old Cave Cellar. Thomas Hardy went on to establish his own very successful winery elsewhere in the 1850s and this company later purchased Chateau Reynella and renamed it the Hardy Winery in 1982. Thus two of the important early wine producing names in South Australia came together in one property. The Hardy Wine Company changed its name to Constellation Wines in 2011 and then to Accolade Wines more recently. The famous Australian potter Gladys Reynell was a daughter of Walter Reynell. Gladys Reynell studied arts and crafts including pottery in Paris and England from 1912. In 1919 after World War One she returned to Adelaide. In that year she established her pottery at Reynell Farm and became the first craft potter in Australia to follow through on all stages of pottery and ceramic production. She exhibited her works in Adelaide to great acclaim in 1919. After her married to one of the Reynell servants, who was also an assistant potter for her, the couple moved to Victoria to escape the opprobrium of her family. Her works are now exhibited in collections of the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, in the Art Gallery of NSW, in the Powerhouse Museum Sydney, the Victorian College of the Arts Melbourne and the Art Gallery of South Australia. |
