| 説明 | Another brief word on the touts (as they're known) offering things when you walk down the street: they're smart and persistent. They initiate contact by saying "Hello", which instantly weeds out tourists from locals; the locals know not to react to the greeting even fractionally. Turn your head even slightly and you invite a sales pitch.Sometimes the pitch will come all the same, with them getting right in your face. You can shake your head, say no, but really, that's seen as engagement and merely encourages them. Saying "Yu Bao" ("I don't want that") sometimes gets the job done, but not always. The only thing to do is keep trucking. Do not stop. I actually missed a few photo opportunities because I didn't want to stop near someone for fear that I'd never shake them. I also had to untrain myself from the instinct that pretending that you can't see or hear someone is incredibly rude; sadly, that rudeness is the only surefire way to be left alone.By the end of my time in Shanghai I was really, really frustrated with this aspect of the city. |
