| 説明 | In the late nineteenth century, the big wall surrounded the Atlantic Sawmills, Cloherty & Semple, Proprietors. You can make out some of the words if you enlarge my photograph.The Eglington Canal was built c.1850 following a curved path south from the Corrib river (Upper) and passing beneath five bridges which have made the watercourse non-navigable. The canal begins to the north of the Salmon Weir on the west bank of Corrib River (upper) where a small harbour is located. The canal then flows south-west with limestone block-lined banks having limestone block coping stones and a narrow tarmac footpath to the west bank before splitting into two separate waterways with the main canal continuing to the south-west and a shorter branch proceeding south beneath a road bridge and a more recent pedestrian bridge. In the past this shorter section would have serviced small group of mills which were built round the small harbour towards the end of the system. The main canal continues south-west before curving back around to continue south-east after passing beneath two recent concrete road bridges with concrete and steel rail parapets. The canal at these points was reduced in width by the addition of limestone block-lined piers which reduce the span of each bridge by two metres eliminating the need for more complex engineering. Between the two bridges is a second branch which follows a south-easterly route before re-entering the canal south of the lock basin via a stone-lined channel. The lock basin has a limestone block lining with limestone coping blocks, timber lock gates and box, sluice racks with more cast-iron safety railings [a more recent addition]. The canal then continues to the south-east before splitting again with the south-east branch passing under William O'Brien Bridge and into Claddagh Quay and the second branch travelling roughly north-east before re-entering the Corrib River(lower) after passing over a stone-lined weir. |
