説明 Unley Pak. Thornber House. This section of land in what is now Unley Park was granted to Thomas Whistler in 1839. When he subdivided part of his lands in 1855 this block was purchased by Catherine Thornber a widow and teacher. Her husband Robert Thornber took up land at Mitcham and also on North Terrace where he built a cottage. It later became known as Ayer’s House after the Premier Ayers of the Burra mine fame who purchased it. Robert Thornber died young (he committed suicide in 1855) and widow and their daughter established a school at Mitcham in 1855. It soon moved to Unley Park (Thornber Street) where Catherine had purchased land. She ran the school here in their home until 1894 when Mrs. Thornber died. Her daughters Ellen and Catherine inherited the property and continued to operate the school. Miss Maria de Lissa visited the school at one stage and Misses Thornber were supporters of the establishment of the SA Kindergarten Union. The Thornber School was sold in 1910 to Caroline Jacobs who added to Thornber School to her own school. Jacob’s School closed in 1911. The first Thornber Hose was built in 1857 and then incorporated into later enlargements. The current Thornber House was built around 1870 to 1875 in local bluestone in the Gothic style but with a Victorian tower with a fancy roofed spire on top of the tower. In 1915 the Thornber sisters sold Thornber House to someone who converted it into flats. In recent years it has been somewhat neglected but it still exists as several flats.
