| 説明 | This photo shows vernal pools on Otay Mesa in San Diego County. You can see federally endangered San Diego button celery (Eryngium aristulatum var. parishii) growing out of the pools. These pools also support San Diego Mesa mint (Pogogyne abramsii), spreading navarretia (Navarretia fossalis), California Orcutt grass (Orcuttia californica), San Diego fairy shrimp (Branchinecta sandigonensis), Riverside fairy shrimp (Streptocephalus woottoni), and the surrounding coastal sage scrub habitat supports coastal California gnatcatchers (Polioptila californica), and has host plants and nectaring plants for the Quino checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas editha quino). There were also numerous Western spadefoot toad (Spea hammondii) tadpoles in the pools (12 month finding in process). In the background on the left side of the image you can see San Miguel Mountain, which is part of the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. The 90-acre Dennery Canyon site has been conserved and restored to offset Caltrans projects such as the SR-905 extension. Prior to restoration in 2008, this area was an agricultural field.
