説明UNESCO World Heritage, Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty Jangneung Jangneung is the tomb of King Injo(1595-1649, r. 1623-1649), the sixteenth king of the Joseon Dynasty, and his first wife Queen Inyeol(1594-1635). Born as the first son of Prince Jeongwon, who was posthumously bestowed the title of King Wonjong, and Queen Dowager Inheon, Injo was placed on the throne after a coup in 1623 and ruled the dynasty for nearly thirty years until his death in 1649. His reign was marked by severe political turbulence, including the Yi Gwal Rebellion in 1624 and the Manchu Invasions of 1627 and 1635. His wife Queen Inyeol was the fourth daughter of Han Jun-gyeom, a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. When Queen Inyeol died of puerperal disease in 1635, her tomb was built in Uncheon-ri, Paju the following year, and was converted to a twin tomb after the death of King Injo in 1649. However, as the royal tombs were damaged by snakes and scorpions, they were rebuilt at the current location in 1731, with the royal couple buried together under one mound.
