説明 | Merimbula and Pambula. The Imlay brothers of Two Fold Bay and Bega had land at what is Merimbula but they sold it on to the Walker brothers who sold it on the Two Fold Bay Pastoral Company in 1852. The Company created a private town in 1855 with a jetty to provide shipping facilities. Merimbula is a pretty coastal resort these days. A little inland is Pambula where the Imlay brothers started farming. A small town was surveyed here in 1843 but not proclaimed until 1885. Despite this some pubs and the Courthouse date from the 1850s. The local “stately” home is called the Grange built in 1844 for Captains John Lloyd. It overlooks the river and is partially visible from the main highway. Lloyd had two convicts assigned to him to build the two storey house. Lloyd invited Syms Covington to move to Pambula which he did. Covington had sailed with Charles Darwin in the Beagle and later became his valet. Covington collected species of barnacles from Two Fold Bay for Charles Darwin and regularly corresponded with him. Eventually Covington became the Post Master at Pambula in 1854. |
