| 説明 | Piet Paaltjens was the nom-de-plume of François HaverSchmidt. He published a very popular collection of poetry called "Snikken en grimlachjes" ("Sobs and Bitter Grins", it has been translated into English by Jacob Lowland as Everlastings). It pokes fun at romantic poetry of the day (1860s). The commemorative stone bears the name of Paaltjens. HaverSchmidt became a minister in the Dutch protestant church and published stories under his own name. He suffered from depression all his life and in the end this "strangling angel" caused him to commit suicide. |
