説明RHS Wisley Gardens near Ripley, Surrey. Our first visit to Wisley this year ... the Spring Fair is on this weekend.Lathraea (toothwort) is a small genus of five to seven species of flowering plants in the family Orobanchaceae, native to temperate Europe and Asia. They are parasitic plants on the roots of other plants, and are completely lacking chlorophyll.Purple Toothwort (Lathraea clandestina) grows on the roots of alder, poplar and willow. In the absence of these hosts it will grow on the roots of a variety of ornamental trees and shrubs such as maple, yew or Rhododendron. Dark purple, hooded flowers emerge from the soil ... one on each stem.Being a parasite, Purple Toothwort doesn't have any green leaves for photosynthesis, and after setting seed it disappears from view. It connects to the root system of its host, often deep down in the soil. Like many parasitic plants, feeding off another plant doesn't seem to have a detrimental effect on the host, and this strange species makes a fascinating addition to the woodland garden flora.
