| 説明 | John Pitcairn, a founder of Pittsburgh Plate Glass - friend and fellow Swedenborgian of Andrew Carnegie - moved to the Philadelphia area and began construction of the Swedenborgian cathedral at Bryn Athyn. Somewhat like the later East Liberty Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, this promised to be a unique accomplishment for his architect, Ralph Adams Cram. They planned to use medieval techniques including design and craftsmanship on site. In fact, Cram sent employees to Bryn Athyn to work. Craftsmen participated in design by constructing scale and full scale models before final execution of features. After Pitcairn's death, his son, Raymond, continued the monumental project. He developed conflict with Cram, who was eventually dismissed from the project. Some of his employees remained, including Harold Thorp Carswell, who became a leading Swedenborgian architect. The exterior articulation of interior function - as seen in the stairwell windows here, was a supposed hallmark of medieval, picturesque and arts & crafts design/building. It is the true meaning of Sullivan's somewhat muddled interpretation of "form follows function." |
