| 説明 | Macedon.Major Thomas Mitchell named Mount Macedon and the district on his Australia Felix explorations of 1836. He named it after the realm of Phillip the second of Macedon (359-336 BC). From this summit he saw a magnificent bay which he named at the same time- Port Phillip Bay. White settlement of the area began in the 1850s. This small town of Macedon which should not be confused with Mount Macedon township was created in 1860 as work proceeded with the Melbourne to Bendigo railway. A small hotel was built in1860 opposite the proposed site of the railway siding which is about 1,700 feet ( ) above sea level. Originally this district was known as Middle Gully and there had been a small gold find here in the 1850s. Within a few years of the train service beginning the name was changed to Macedon and in the 1870s the nearby area of Mount Macedon became a summer retreat or “hill station” area for the wealthy of Melbourne wanting to escape the summer heat. Most of these people arrived at the Macedon railway station before their staff took them by coach to their summer retreat. Consequently Macedon town grew with a school, stores several churches and a State Forest nursery in the 1870s. Little further development occurred after that. Much of the town was devastated by the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983 but rebuilding took place. The nearby settlement of Mount Macedon began as a timber felling area and a school opened here in 1857 but by the 1870s most of the good timber had been felled and the area was developed as the Mt Macedon hill station. One of the first to build a mansion in the area was David Syme one of the the proprietor of the Melbourne Age who built his house in 1869. Others soon followed his lead. Syme’s mansion was acquired by the Victorian government in 1886 as a summer retreat for the state Governor. It was used by Victorian governors until it was sold in 1934. The exclusive nature of Mount Macedon changed a little in the 1920s and 1930s when some commuters began live there, holiday guest houses appeared for the middling classes and stores and churches were built. In 1935 a World War One soldiers memorial was erected on the summit and a tourist road made to provide access. Today some of the grand and not so grand houses have opened their gardens to the public for their fine display of spring bulbs and blossoms and autumn coloured leaves. The high altitude and rainfall still makes Mount Macedon a gardener’s paradise as the area was once described as Victoria’s “Garden of Eden”. The cemetery at Macedon ended up being the resting place for locals and some of the notables from Melbourne who spent their holidays there. |
