説明 | Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius, 1787) - Atlantic ghost crab burrow in Florida, USA. (summer 2009)The crustaceans are a large group of arthropods that inhabit marine, marginal marine, freshwater, and terrestrial habitats. The crustaceans include crabs, lobsters, shrimp, crayfish, barnacles, ostracods, and other organisms. The oldest fossil crustaceans are in the Cambrian. The group experienced a significant radiation in the oceans during the Mesozoic Marine Revolution. The above photo shows the surface openings of a burrow constructed by Ocypode quadrata, the Atlantic ghost crab (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_ghost_crab). Ghost crab burrows are generally Y-shaped in cross-section (Example: www.georgialifetraces.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Y-Sh...). In the rock record, burrows are one example of trace fossils. Trace fossils are any indirect evidence of ancient life. They refer to features in rocks that do not represent parts of the body of a once-living organism. Traces include footprints, tracks, trails, burrows, borings, and bitemarks. Body fossils provide information about the morphology of ancient organisms, while trace fossils provide information about the behavior of ancient life forms. Interpreting trace fossils and determination of the identity of a trace maker can be straightforward (for example, a dinosaur footprint represents walking behavior) or not. Sediments that have trace fossils are said to be bioturbated. Burrowed textures in sedimentary rocks are referred to as bioturbation. Trace fossils have scientific names assigned to them, in the same style & manner as living organisms or body fossils. Fossil ghost crab burrows are called Psilonichnus upsilon (Example: www.flickr.com/photos/jsjgeology/15693044993).Trace fossils are also called ichnofossils. The study of traces and trace fossils is ichnology.Classification: Animalia, Arthropoda, Crustacea, Malacostraca, Decapoda, Brachyura, OcypodidaeLocality: Bowman's Beach, southern shore of western Sanibel Island, Gulf of Mexico coast of southwestern Florida, USA (vicinity of 26° 27' 34.02" North latitude, 82° 09' 26.49" West longitude)------------------More info. at:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crustaceananden.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_ghost_crab |
