説明 | The Black Swallowtail is also considered a mimic of the Pipevine Swallowtail. The colors and pattern impart defensive mimicry of the toxic Pipevine. Note that the blue of the Pipevine is generated by thin film interference while the blue of the Black Swallowtail comes from the blue speckling deposited on the wings. I believe this is a blue pigment but butterflies can also deposit powdery material that generates color through light scattering. This is called pruinescence. |
