| 説明 | We took Jessie to the dog park for the first time on Sunday. She pottered about and met a few other dogs but wasn't particularly interested in running about or chasing balls. This is the only time she up and ran. Another dog was chasing a ball and she just got the urge. She reared up like a stallion, then bolted as soon as she hit the ground, just after this shot. She ran parallel to that dog, racing it back to its master, stopped for a pat, then came back to us. And that was it. Excitement was over. The women we were talking to left. And we decided to do the same. At the gate, we stopped for water and got to talking to the guy whose dog Jessie has raced. Next thing we knew she was pinned to the ground squealing and crying as it snapped at her neck. I started running for them and Lisa yelled at the other owner. He jerked into motion and tried to pull his dog off. He had no collar or harness on it and ended up having to wrap his arms around its chest to pull it off. But not before it severely mauled her neck. She retreated, yelping, to the centre of the park and we could see her neck was torn. Skin flapping and blood dripping. I ran to her and calmed her down. I was concerned about the amount of blood and the size of the wound. I pushed the skin up and applied pressure but it caused her so much pain she ran from me.Lisa was on the phone to friends, calling for a lift as we had walked to the park. She called the vet and told them to expect us.I got Jessie calm again and warned some other people who'd entered the park to leash their dogs and keep them away from the attacker, who was still in the park. Its owner was also on the phone. He offered us a lift, but we weren't going anywhere near his dog again. One couple volunteered to drive us. She would walk their dog home while he drove us. I gathered Jessie up in my arms and carried her out of the park. He helped me into the car and offered a towel to help with her bleeding. Ivan, whoever you are, you're a bloody legend.Ivan got us to the vet in record time and unfortunately I shocked a customer with the gruesome state of Jessie's neck. By this time I'd had a good chance to study it and realise it was only skin damage. Still horrifying. Still dangerous. But no muscles, veins or arteries had been damaged. The vet was calm and ordered. Explained his prognosis and promptly took her off for some pain-killers (methadone!) and shock relief before surgery. Since then, they've taken amazing care of Jessie, but there have been various ups and downs that have delayed matters and Jessie still isn't home with us.The surgery went well but as she's 10 years old, there have been a few complications with her recovery. We'd prefer she's where she can get the care she needs, but it's quite hard. Especially the visits.Yesterday, she was swollen and deformed by all the fluid under her wounds. She looked like an entirely different breed of dog (and not a pretty one.) She wagged her tail when she saw us and wanted cuddles, but she was obviously out of it.Today she was much better and we thought we'd be bringing her home (as we've thought every day) but she still needs more care. Even though the wound at the top of her neck has really started to heal properly, the part on her throat is still open and raw. The vet had to remove some stitches to allow the fluid to drain. We hope to bring her tomorrow, but her wounds won't fully close over for at least six weeks. Full recovery is expected to take a minimum of three months. Take care of your darlings. Shield your precious ones. The whole experience has been so brutal and shocking and it really grabbed us while our emotions for Jessie were at such an amazing rate of growth. We've only had this beautiful lovely girl for a week. |
