| 説明 | Young playing a double-aulos for an audience. Auloi were generally played in pairs. The image shows an interesting technical detail: the pipes are held in position by a band which passed round the cheeks and over the head of the player, assisting him to blow strongly. Among the listeners a goose is standing in front of the “auletes”: Its presence possibly alludes to the mythical musician Olympos of Musia who enchanted humans and animals with his music. However, the presence of the bird could be interpreted as a pun; it could mean the “auletes” made a ‘goose-note’. Ancient Greeks associated ironically the noise made by geese with a poor flute-playing technique.CARC / CAVI @ www.beazley.ox.ac.ukAttic black figure neck amphoraNear Kleimachos Painter About 570-550 BCNational Archaeological Museum, Athens, 559 |
