説明 | New Era Village Settlement near Cadell. New Era was one of about 17 communistic village settlement schemes set up across SA, but mainly in the Riverland, in 1894 to open up the land and provide work for the unemployed during a time of severe economic depression. Members paid a small sum to join a settlement scheme and agreed to abide by a strict set of social and life regulations such as no alcohol and no illicit cohabiting etc. The government provided money for irrigation pumps, fertilizers and seeds etc and the men were expected to clear the land, level the land, dig irrigation channels and plant trees, vines and crops to produce an income sufficient to provide for all settlers. The rules were ignored, the settlements ran up huge debts, the men worked spasmodically as they were working on communal land not their owl land and feuds and arguments and disputes erupted constantly especially between the married and unmarried men who paid different fees to join the scheme. There was generally a lack of leadership and skills and consequently most settlements failed and were closed down with in ten years by the government. New Era was one of the most unsuccessful village settlements. It was described by a government report as a fiasco. It began with 25 families adding up to 101 people. But only 22 men ever reported for work and they were not committed workers. Channels were dug but they were in the wrong places, too steep and they were generally useless. The Chairman of New Era was described as incompetent and the New Era Settlement was abandoned in 1896 after just two years. A stone school room was built for the children in 1894 and it still remains on a local property as does the ruins of the settlement store which would have houses seeds, tools, hoes, fertilizers etc for communal use. The school operated until 1924. |
