| 説明 | A transit of Venus occurs when Venus passes directly between Earth and the Sun. During a transit, Venus can be seen from Earth as a small black disk moving across the face of the Sun. Transits of Venus are among the rarest predictable astronomical phenomena. The next transit of Venus will happen in the year 2117. Only six Venus transits have occurred since the first scientific observation of the event in 1639.Historically, Venus transits are of great scientific importance as they were used to gain the first realistic estimates of the size of the solar system. In 1769 the Royal Society sent Captain James Cook to the South Pacific to observe the transit. In 1874, teams of researchers from France, Germany, Britain and the United States of America visited New Zealand to observe the transit of Venus. Poor weather meant that many observers were unable to make measurements. The American team based in Queenstown had the most success. The document pictured above is included in a Department of Lands and Survey record, which contains many pages of computations made in 1874. The origin and provenance of this record and others in the same series (6865) is unclear. The forms used indicate that they were associated with the British Astronomical Expedition of that year. However it is possible that they were initially compiled by New Zealand officials aiding the project.
