| 説明 | This is the Fonda, Gloversville, and Johnstown electric railroad (the same company had a steam road that only went between those three communities. It's a rail-trail now, most of it.) It's on the north side of the Mohawk just off NY-5 at CR-51. The trolley had been running next to NY-5 when it suddenly darted away to the north, crossed this creek on the obvious east and less-obvious west abutments, ducked under the New York Central through this tiny tunnel, and went off west to Amsterdam. It's neat how small the tunnel is, but the neatest thing are the datestamps in the concrete of the tunnel. You may have to download it to see, but below the 7'9" sign it says 1915. Above the sign it says 1942. I don't know if the tunnel was structurally inadequate, or if they had raised the level of the line generally and needed more concrete to hold the ballast here. You can see the ballast peeking over the edge as it is.The railbed on the other side of the tunnel is a gated private road. |
