説明 | Colorado National Monument is a colorful and scenic park just southwest of the town of Grand Junction in western Colorado, USA. It's located in the northeastern part of the Colorado Plateau Physiographic Province, a large section of continental crust that was significant uplifted during the Cenozoic. The rocks in the park are gently folded into a large monocline that has been erosionally dissected into a series of dramatic canyons. The above photo shows outcrops of Mesozoic sedimentary rocks over Precambrian metamorphic rocks in Columbus Canyon. The dark gray-colored rocks in the canyon floor are gneisses and schists of the Black Canyon Formation (Paleoproterozoic, 1.759 Ga), the local basement rock unit. The reddish-colored slope above that (partly to mostly covered light brown talus) is hematitic shales and siltstones of the Chinle Formation (Upper Triassic). The cliff-forming unit above that is the Wingate Sandstone (Lower Jurassic), an eolian quartzose sandstone interval deposited in an ancient sand dune field.Locality: Columbus Canyon (view from Cold Shivers Point), southeastern Colorado National Monument, southwest of the town of Grand Junction, west-central Mesa County, far-western Colorado, USA |
