| 説明 | "I set the Crown on the King's Head, he hastens me to a better crown than his own" Argyll's monument has occupied this small chapel in St. Giles Kirk on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh's since 1895. The inscription records the observations of Archibald Campbell the first Marquess and Eighth Earl of Argyll shortly before he was executed by the forces of Charles II in 1661. Archibald Campbell took over the wealth and estates of Clan Campbell when his father abandoned them in favour of the religion of Rome. The Marquess was a hyper-active soldier and statesman who stood firm against Charles I and was an adherent to the Covenanter cause. His great enemy the Marquess of Montrose, originally a Covenanter who later defected to the King, met the same; fate being executed in Edinburgh eleven years before Argyll. There is a similar monument in a side chapel on the opposite side of St. Giles, an arrangement surely neither could have forecast. |
