説明Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Department of Administration (DA) Assistant Secretary Gregory Parham present the Hall of Heroes Plaque for Cesar Chavez to Chavez’s grandson, Cesar Chavez at USDA’s 2015 Abraham Lincoln Honor Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015. The Hall of Heroes Award Program started in 1999 as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Millennium activities. The purpose of the Hall of Heroes program is to recognize contributions with a direct and lasting impact on national and international agriculture and related programs. The criteria for induction into the USDA Hall of Heroes requires contributions that reflect a lifetime commitment of service to achieving the mission and vision of USDA, demonstrate National and International prominence and public recognition, helped to shape Agriculture programs that have worldwide impact, demonstrate a groundbreaking role in breaking down barriers to further the role of agriculture, and demonstrate a legacy that continues to grow. Cesar Chavez was from a family of farmworkers and later a farmworker himself. During Chavez’s farm-working days the wages were nearly non-existent and working conditions were horrifying and the workers did not have the basic right to organize and unionize, or the ability to fulfill basic needs, such as affordable, clean, and safe housing. Chavez’s leadership brought higher wages to farmworkers, improved the quality of treatment farmworkers had to endure in the fields, and provided safe and decent housing. Most importantly, Chavez led a social change movement that cemented farmworkers’ right to organize and seize control over their livelihood. Chavez said, “Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducated the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore." USDA photo by Bob Nichols.
