| 説明 | Seen here with Professor Steven Reagan of Durham University at the closing event of the 2015 Durham Book Festival. Sinead Morrissey has been the Festival Laureate a role involving outreach and educational work in the area together with the task of producing a commissioned poem, always read for the first time at the closing festival event. Sinead's poem dealt with the mining history of Durham and was quite spectacular, she held her audience completely. At one point she remarked that "you are all very quiet" And we were, we were, held rapt by the sheer grace of her poetry.SHOSTAKOVICHThe wind and its instruments were my secret teachers. In Podolskaya Street I played piano for my mother--note for note without a music sheet-- while the windin the draughty flat kept up. tapping its fattened handagainst the glass, moaning through the stove, banginga door repeatedly out on the landing--the ghost in the machine of Beethoven's Two PreludesThrough All The Minor Keys, that said they lied.Later I stood in a wheat field and heard the wind make musicfrom everything it touched. The top notes were the husks:fractious but nervous, giddy, little-voiced,while underneath a strong strange melody pulsedas though the grain was rigging, or a forest. In all my praise and plainsong I wrote downthe sound of a man's boots from behind the mountain.Sinead Morrissey - From Parallax. |
