| 説明 | I believe this was Thursday 20th September 1984: During a normal school day, at about 2pm a very large fire took hold within the gymnasium area (centre right of the picture) and spread quickly to the sports hall area (which as can be seen - collapsed during the intense fire) and the 'judo room' & equipment storage area - which is to the right of the main sports hall. The swimming pool, changing areas, squash courts, the upstairs bar & downstairs bar/community area were partially destroyed or suffered very extensive damage. The First Year area and School Library received heavy smoke damage.These buildings were the equivalent of 3 or 4 stories high but were set below ground level - a moat of water can be seen around the sports hall (the huge quantities that were used by the WM Fire Brigade) testifies to that.This was later in the afternoon of the 20th, the general public are just merrily hanging around watching the fireman! It was possible to walk right through the school grounds via gates at the Chard Rd end and near Princethorpe Way - and locals often took a short-cut or walked their dogs here. That easy access allowed a miscreant [or was it two?] to start a fire as a diversionary tactic - with near fatal results. |
