| 説明 | The Brandenburg Gate was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a sign of peace and built between 1788 and 1791. It was not part of Berlin's old fortifications, but one of the gates within the fiscal excise wall (Akzisemauer), erected in the 1730s. The Gate's design is based upon the Propylaea, the gateway to the Acropolis in Athens. |
