My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks.Pompeii’s Pillar is a granite pillar, almost 30 meter (100ft) high, it is one of the largest monolithic columns ever erected. Built amidst the ruins of the Serapium, in 297 AD, in honour of Emperor Diocletian. He was the person who brought wheat to the country during a time of famine. The pillar is set on a stone base 25 feet square and 15 feet high. Alexandria, Egypt. The single column marks the site of what was a huge temple, constructed of marble and precious metals on the interior. Some of the tunnels of the complex are open for to explore and many artifacts have been recovered. A life-size black basalt bull and a golden plaque from the Serapis are displayed in the Greco-Roman Museum. |
