| 説明 | This painting hangs in the display room high-up in the Scott Monument in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh and is of the monument's architect: George Meikle Kemp. The following information is given beneath the artwork:Both Sir Walter Scott and George Meikle Kemp were Freemasons, a fraternal society developed in medieval Scotland.George Meikle Kemp was a member of Lodge Edinburgh St. Andrew No 48. This anonymous painting depicts him with his model of the monument.The painting was restored in 2011 with the support of Lodge David No. 36, to which Sir Walter Scott was initiated on 2nd March 1801.Kemp wrote poetry in his spare time, his father is the subject of the following short verse:KEMP'S FATHERI now sat down, tho' against my will My life frae me was quickly flying ;The deep-blawn wreaths o' drifted snaw,On every side were deeply lying.Wi angry nature's direful rage,Frae youth's blythe e'e mylife was taken,In winter's cauld and weary blast,When fruitful fields were a' forsaken.George Meikle Kemp 1795 - 1844.Sir Walter Scott 1771 - 1832. |
