| 説明 | This memorial tablet, in the Chepman Aisle in St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh is set in the floor beneath the impressive prone white marble (or is it alabaster?) sculpture of the executed Marquis of Montrose. Graham was a soldier statesman and poet and one of many victims of Scotland's seventeenth century religious wars. First a Covenanter then a Royalist, controversy and drama were his companions and ultimately he was overwhelmed by them and the events he strived to control. He was beheaded nearby and for years his weathered skull decorated one of high pinnacles adorning Edinburgh's Tollbooth. When Charles II was restored to the English crown he posthumously pardoned Graham, who was then as it were, brought in from the cold in 1661. One of his prophetic verses is mounted on the side of his sculpture above and reads:"Scatter my ashes. Strew them in the air,Lord, since thou knowest where all these atoms are,I'm hopeful Thou'lt recover once my dust,And confident Thou'lt raise me with the Just"James Graham Marquis of Montrose 1612 - 1650. |
