| 説明 | After a lot of talk over the years about which is the best beer I decided to do a parallel tasting of similar aged bottles of St. Bernardus Abt 12 and the world famous Westvleteren 12.Both bottles had a best before date of May 2016, so still ten months to go when I opened the bottles in July 2015. As the photo reveals, both poured large beige heads. When the foam died down and I could better smell both beers, I got a lot more dried fruit (dates and prunes) from the St. Bernardus, but both had a nice caramel sweet flavor and some yeasty spice notes. The taste of both had dried fruits and a big malty sweetness, but the Westvletern 12 had a sharper bitterness to it, almost resiny, that St. Bernardus didn't. I also got a light sting of alcohol from the Westvleteren, so the Abt 12 seemed smoother. As they warmed up both beers improved in flavor but I still preferred the flavor of Abt 12, so for me the 1-2 year old St Bernardus Abt 12 seem better suited to my taste than the Westvleteren 12.---As a side note. Both bottles had been in my beer fridge for a year when I opened them, I was careful not to shake them when I took them out. Interestingly, while the Abt 12 had a thick layer of yeast sediments at the bottom, the Westvleteren 12 had none. It looked almost filtered. I wonder if this is due to the Westmalle yeast strain they use? Funny thing is that St. Bernardus still use the original Westvleteren yeast strain they used when brewing Westvleteren for the monks at Sint Sixtus until 1992. |
