説明 | Officers barracks Seething, UK 1945. L-R Co-Pilot James Beadling, sitting Pilot Bill Whetsell, center standing Navigator Larry Taylor, left Bombardier James Muenker. The photo was taken in 1945 in Seething, England. "The portion of the B24 wing behind Muenker contained the smallest of the tanks in the wing. Since we didn't have a cleaners on the base, we used the 100 octane aviation gas in the tank as a cleaning fluid for our uniforms. All the tanks held 2800 gallons. The uniforms had to be aired a couple of days to reduce the gasoline smell. We were counting the returning planes from a mission on a "down" day for us in our squadron. Two pot belly stoves is all the heat we had in our barracks, but we were thankful for so many didn't have that much. Lt Taylor""An Englishman asked me for some of the 100 octane gas I had used to wash my uniform. He mixed it with the gallon of rationed gas. He had to crank the car to start it. He got the crank on the top of the spin circle and used his leg to push it down. The car backfired, motor revolved backwards and his knee hit his chest and knocked him out. I couldn’t climb the fence to get to him, but he finally moved and said, "I say, that petrol sure has some kick to it. Lt. Taylor” |
