説明On September 18 in 1944 three New Zealand Royal New Zealand Air Force pilots were killed when their Corsair planes crashed near Torokina in Bougainville. All three planes were destroyed as well. They were part of the No 16 F Squadron, which was formed in July 1942 at the RNZAF base at Woodboune near Blenheim. They were returning from a routine strafing sweep of Japanese posts in the New Britain area near Raboul when they encountered bad weather and collided in mid-air. The subsequent enquiry found that Flight/ Lt Keith Starnes, sectional leader, did not appear to have heard the weather warning issued by Flight Control and an instruction to land at Green Island. His body was subsequently recovered from the sea. The bodies of the other pilots, F/Sgt D Ellison and P/O C McLean were not found and they were listed as missing believed killed. Starnes and Ellison were described by Squadron leader M C P Jones as good steady pilots with second tour experience, while he described McLean as a capable pilot whose formation flying ability was good. The RNZAF fought in three main areas of the Pacific, Singapore, the seas around Japan and the Solomon Islands. By the time of the crash the islands of the Pacific were showing much damage from the fighting and the men arriving in the region were left in no doubt they were entering a war zone. Intense shelling had destroyed trees and the bodies of Japanese and allied soldiers were buried all around in makeshift graves.
