Behind the sign are the Gold Medal Flour elevators and part of the old Washburn "A" Mill Complex now turned into fancy condos and a museum. This area is located in the historic West Milling District.The Washburn "A" Mill was the largest and most technologicaly advanced flour mill in the world. In 1878 the mill exploded killing 18. Incidentally, Betty Crocker was created as a pen name for answering consumer letters to this company.The Washburn "A" Mill's main competitor was the Pillsbury "A" Mill across the river in the East Milling District. |
