説明 | "...load each mortar. 5 sloops with 24 broadside 6 8. 9 gunboats each carrying 6 & 8 guns each the whole fleet numbering 690 guns. Our only loss is one schooner sunk. One of the finest gunboats sunk after sinking their gunboats the Morgan. One of the worst things that happened was the Verona fired a charge of canister into the Richmond sweeping the forward parrott guns crew and then sinking close to shore. Our whole loss is about 100 killed and wounded. The forts are but little damaged the mortar shells burying themselves about 30 feet in the ground doing little damage only dismantling the guns & shocking the earth under them. The batteries along by New Orleans were nearly leveled to the earth..."From the George Riddell Collection (COLL/2009) at the Archives Branch, Marine Corps History Division OFFICIAL USMC PHOTOGRAPH |
