I was still stressed, completely fatigued, and operating on lower brain functions, but lunch, and the promise of a half hour break on top of the mountain helped keep the thought of descent a distant intangible future thing.One of the members of our group gave me one hundred yen to offer incense before the Buddha of the temple. It can be considered my first o-settai (gifts of food/money/anything offered to pilgrims), a thought which did not cross my mind as I was only looking forward to sitting down somewhere, and not considering how I was going to make it back down a mountain which was clearly trying to punish me. |
