説明 | Gawler Blocks now called Evanston Gardens. This fertile area of the Adelaide Plains near the Gawler River and the town of Gawler was settled by farmers around 1850. In 1905 the locals asked the Presbyterian Church in Gawler to conduct services at Gawler Blocks as the population of that area had increased significantly since 1892. In 1892 the SA government purchased over 600 acres of land at Gawler Blocks to sell off at low rates in acreages of less than 20 acres to struggling families. This was at a time of high unemployment because of the Great Depression of 1892 onwards. Blockers blocks, which were designed to give poor families some extra income from the sale of eggs, milk butter or fruit, were also established at the same time at places like Mylor in the Adelaide Hills, Clare and Melrose in the Mid North. With more population one local farmer donated about an acre of land for a church which was completed as a Presbyterian Church in 1907. Reverend Bardwell of the Gawler Presbyterian Church had assisted the locals to get the church built. It was also to be used as a hall for the local community and the Presbyterian Church newspaper referred to it as the Hall at Gawler Blocks in May 1907. The foundation stone was laid 26 July 1907 by Mr John Murray of Springton and the building opened later that year. The SA Education Department then rented the church for a school room from 1908 until 1923 when they built the old stone and brick classrooms and a headmaster’s residence, with a half hipped roof over a gable end. The former head master’s residence is now used as the school office. The name of the school was changed from Gawler Blocks to Evanston Gardens in 1968. A second and much larger Gawler Blocks hall was opened on the other side of the primary school in 1946. |
