| 説明 | All along the river were dotted bamboo houses on stilts. I have often wondered what was the function of stilts on traditional achenese houses. In this area where tigers are still common the stilts are presumably to protect from animals. On the subject of tigers the locals were very phlegmatic, 'yes there are some but they don't bother us'. All the way along the river monkeys howled from the forest. Apparently Oranghutan are common, with 3 bands close to Alurkejerun. The river is on the edge of the Gunung Leuser national park and it is supposed to be a 3 day hike through the jungle to the peak of Mount Leuser. Many of these houses are used by the men when they are working in the forest and not for the families. The better huts are roofed with lawang which makes a dense tidy looking thatch. |
