| 説明 | These are statues of the the Jizou Bodhisattva, or Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in sanskrit. This Bodhisattva is generally depicted as a wandering monk due to Jizou's traditional vow not to reach enlightment and ascend to Buddhahood until all of Hell is emptied. Ojizou is traditionally prayed to for travelers and children, but is also seen as the protector or those being punished in Hell and also stillborn, miscarried, and aborted babies. It is thus that you find this Boddhisattva in abundance at cemeteries.A quick not about Buddhist Hell. Unlike Christian Hell it is not permanent. It's more like a cosmic Prison, after you recieve your 10 or 10,000 years of punishment you are processed and reincarnated appropriately. The same soul can be continually punished in hell, but the idea is that after enough lifetimes it will achieve enlightenment at some point. |
