説明 | Though much of Tbilisi's Jewish population has repatriated to Israel, Christians, Jews, and Muslims have a fairly long history of living together in peace in Georgia. A small but vibrant population of Jews remain and worship here at the Iulo Synagogue, and the surrounding neighborhood in the "old town" or dzveli district of Tbilisi also has several kosher markets- all just a short walk from the Mosque, I might add.In Soviet times, the Synagogue was "officially" closed for religious use, though worship was still conducted in secret on the second floor. Sections of the Torah were hidden in copies of the writings of Lenin and Marx, just in case there was a police/KGB raid. Clever, no?Fairly recently, the paint was stripped off the brick of the Synagogue, so it now is a natural red brick color instead of the light sandy beige we see here. |
