説明 | I read Gene Weingarten's humor column in the Washington Post and I remember reading his column in which he searches for the Armpit of America and finds it at Battle Mountain , NV.When I saw the sign on the Interstate for "Battle Mt" and saw the huge "BM" letters on the side of the mountain, I just had to turn off and check the place out.It turns out it's not too bad of a town -- certainly no worse than the other run-down towns dotting the U.S. Great Basin desert along Interstate 80. Casinos don't dominate like they so pathetically do in so many other Nevada towns and truckstops.Battle Mountain proclaims itself the "Basecamp for the Nevada Outback," and outdoor recreational opportunities seem to abound in the area. A number of moderately-sized peaks ranging from 9000 up to over 11,000 feet elevation are within 100 miles of Battle Mountain. The Humboldt River flows nearby. I'm going to do some research, but I assume that motorized recreation (dirt bikes, 4-wheelers, etc) probably dominate, but camping, backpacking, climbing and peak-bagging are certainly available in the area if you don't mind doing these activities in high desert scrub.Besides, a town with a decent coffee shop can't be all that bad. I've certainly been in worse. Please visit Cyclelicious Bicycle Blog. |
