| 説明 | Screenshot of the now-coderotted system that Libby and I collaborated on in the DESIRE project, '98/99. It was pretty cool for its time. Was a kinda of RDF-configurable space for searching and browsing across Web accessible search engines, databases, directories. Services were described in RDF, and accessed either by the WHOIS++ protocol, Z39.50 (a bibliographic protocol) or at some point, and simple RDF / DC wrapper for WHOIS++. The stateful search results UI was based on earlier work at ILRT by Joel Crisp, who build a distributed search infrastructure on top of W3C's Jigsaw. Basic idea was that the server would hang onto your distributed search results, giving you access to results as they arrived, and let you navigate them either integrated or by-search-target. There was ability to view hierarchical RDF sitemaps, which built on the work at Mozilla and Guha's old MCF code. In fact there was an MCF parser in there somewhere, thanks to Larry Franklin's MSc thesis work at ILRT in summer of '97, where he wrote a Java applet for MCF sitemap navigation. It could also display RSS 0.9x, I think thanks to a driver for the SiRPAC RDF parser that Ian Davis wrote, which re-shaped the RDF into something useful. Oh, and there was a kind of recommender system, with javascript bookmarklets, so you could see pages recommended/tagged by your friends. It was basically a bit of a playground. Libby did most of the coding, though I think I contrib'd the original Java RDF library she started with. I re-discovered this slide buried in a workshop presentation from the DESIRE project site, which is now back online.Apologies to non-geeks for what must sound like gibberish here. Basically, this is a bit of nostalgia for some old software I worked on with Libby. It did some cool things and was ahead of it's time, but we never really released it properly. Or finished it.
