| 説明 | The bodies of female M. macrurus are an inch and a half or more long. Their ovipositors more than double total length. They can be up to five inches in total length, but are harmless. They cannot sting humans.Their larva are parasites of Pigeon Tremex Horntail Wasps (Tremex columba) larvae. Female Pigeon Tremex insert their eggs under the bark of a tree in serious decline or already dead. The eggs hatch into wood boring larva. Female M. macrurus detect horntail larva inside the wood. They drill into the tree with their long ovipositors, then paralyze the larva with a sting and lay an egg. When the egg hatches, the Giant Ichneumon larva consumes the horntail larva.Giant Ichneumon Wasp (Megarhyssa macrurus) Ovipositing video: vimeo.com/71611503Additional natural history information: www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/insect/05604.html |
