| 説明 | Three great blue heron chicks are finally visible in the lower nest in the right tree in the heron rookery at Metzger Farm Open Space in Westminster and Broomfield, Colorado. Another chick is also in the nest. This was the first nest in the rookery to begin incubating. Great blue herons lay eggs about one to two days apart. They begin incubating the first egg, so the eggs typically hatch about one to two days apart. The last chick hatched will be smaller than the others and may not survive the competition from the larger chicks. Last year (2014) four chicks were in this nest initially, but only three survived. The mother sits over or broods the newly hatched young for the first 1 to 2 weeks, and then starts standing on the side of the nest to guard the young, as shown here.
