| 説明 | We’ll meet again VE Day Big LunchThe Big Lunch teamed up with Northern Ireland War memorial for a street party commemorating the welcome of peace in Europe on VE Day and to remind people what life was like In the era of the 1940s, a time of huge shortages, separation and loss, everyone pulled together as a community to share food, celebrate peace and remember those who would never come home. Beacons will be lit all over the UK tonight from coast to coast and our day in Belfast was a special reminder to us of how simple acts of friendship go a long way to reduce loneliness and create a stronger community. We hope the event will encourage people to revive similar community spirit in life today by taking part in this year’s Big Lunch, sharing your own rations and pooling together to get to know one and other better. Street parties were an intrinsic part of the celebrations in every corner of the UK, so we were delighted to be asked to join forces to mark such an occasion. Particularly as Singer Dame Vera Lynn, aged 98 recently pointed out this could be the last major anniversary at which the generation that fought at home and abroad in the war is able to gather in strength. Turning the clock back to 1945, representatives of some of the groups keeping community spirit alive in their neighbourhoods, with their annual Big Lunch community events were invited into the museum to watch special footage of Belfast’s VE day street parties and to participate in a street party style day of our own.Dressed head-to-toe in the style of the day we treated our guests to Second World War rationing-inspired refreshments, and some tunes from the day, such as “Daisy, Daisy, Pack up your troubles and We’ll meet again” We know from historians such as Rob Colls, history lecturer at Leicester University, that the original 1945 celebration was much less spontaneous than we imagine, he was quoted in a 50th anniversary article by Hester Lacey in The Independent as saying "There was a big push from the top, from the Government and the media. And while things like street parties might have appeared spontaneous, they were down to the resourcefulness of the women, who would have had to organise everything."We know today that Big Lunch street parties and community events are also down to the resourcefulness of men, women and children who do what they can often on a shoestring to bring fun and friendship to your areas and and we salute you for keeping community spirit alive and well in your neck of the woods! To order your 2015 Free Big Lunch pack visit www.thebiglunch.com. |
