| 説明 | The Cordyceps genus is a highly diverse taxa (400 sp.) of parasitic fungus. Most of them attack mainly insects and other arthropods but some of them use other fungi as hosts. Once infected, the mycellium replaces the hosts tissues from inside, until finally an elongated body (ascocarp) spurges from the back of the insect (as the beetle in the pic) and grows a little spherical thing (perithecium) from which spores are liberated. This genus is famous as the mind-controlling fungus for it is known some species affect host behaviour. Ophiocordyceps unilateralis attacks ants and makes them climb high in branches and attach there before they die. This ensures perfect conditions for the parasite growth and dispersal from altitude from the sporophite that sprouts from the dead insect head. I don't know the species in the pic, but it looks as one of the behaviour-affecting-to climb ones.... :D |
