The card was sent from Hall Farm, Dell Road GraysBadgers Dene may have been built in these quarry workings. The name derives from John Meeson who owned the chalk workings. The nearby cement works was owned by Edmund Wright Brookes who was a quaker and humanitarian who had travelled to Russia to investigate conditions there in the famine and later met Tolstoy. His home, Duvals, in Meeson's Lane, bought from Meeson, where he died, later became an annexe of Ockendon mental asylum. He and his wife produced 10 children.Quarrying commenced in 1688 for the production of lime. Remnants of the tramway which is in the centre of the view,from Meeson's pit to a wharf on the Thames may be seen - a bridge parapet survives. |
