説明 | A team of UK doctors are helping a Kathmandu hospital to get back on its feet, following the damage done by the earthquake in Nepal. This 43-year-old man is just one of the patients taking refuge in a makeshift ward in the hospital's basement. He said:"I'm in the hospital because I have typhoid. I've had four operations but I still don't know what the major problem is. "I'm in pain and I want to get better fast. Our home has collapsed. So me and my wife are living at the hospital"The hospital in Kathmandu was forced to close its main building, due to an overhanging collapsed tower threatening the safety of patients. The hospital staff moved its critical patients to the safety of an underground car park following the earthquake.A team of UK firefighters are working to make the hospital safe while the medics are carrying out a "needs assessment" of around 80 patients who are crowded into the basement – helping to identify those who need the most urgent care, seeing what support the patients can draw on from family members and friends and trying to match up cases with care being offered by other relief agencies outside the hospital: all of which will help to ease the pressure on the hospital until it is fully functional again. The medics are part of the UK's International Emergency Trauma Register, deployed to Nepal by the British government. They are drawn from health services across the UK and are ready to be head overseas within 24 hours to help respond to major international catastrophes. The firefighters are part of the UK's International Search and Rescue team that have been deployed by the British government to help Nepal's relief efforts. The specialist team is drawn from 15 different fire and rescue services from across the UK.BackgroundOn 25 April, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the country, killing more than 5000 people, and injuring thousands more. The UK is responding to Nepal's request for international help, sending search and rescue teams, emergency medics and logistical support.Find out more at: www.gov.uk/nepal-earthquake-2015---------------------------------------Picture: Jessica Lea/DFIDFree-to-use photoThis image is posted under a Creative Commons - Attribution Licence, in accordance with the Open Government Licence.
